To my surprise, well after the Easter holiday had passed, I had found some unopened bags of chocolate Easter eggs in my basement pantry!  I guess I hid those eggs pretty good.  But, would they still be okay to eat?

The expiration on the bag read Aug. 2015.  I ripped it open anyway and popped one of the chocolate eggs in my mouth. It tasted.…mmmm sooo good!   I discovered that dark chocolate, as long as it is unopened, can last for at least two years while milk and white chocolate can last up to a year.  Once the package is opened, dark chocolate should be of great quality for a year, milk and white for around 8-10 months.

How to tell if it is bad? In most cases you’ll be able to see white spots or mold growing on the chocolate bar. When that happens, discard the chocolate immediately. The “Use by” date only means that the chocolate should be of best quality up until that time and it doesn’t mean that it goes bad the day after.

If it looks and tastes fine and smells like chocolate, it’s safe to eat it..
