This is something I never thought I'd ever have to write about, but it IS 2016, and selfies are everywhere, so if you're going to take a selfie to prove you voted today, I've done some digging to uncover the law for you!

Justin Timberlake got in trouble earlier this year for taking a selfie in the voting booth because in Tennessee it's illegal to take photographs at polling places, I've seen many photos on my facebook page of people sharing their "I voted" selfies, and have even seen a few selfies in the actual voting booth, so I wanted to make sure my friends aren't breaking the law!

So here's the breakdown of the tri-state!

  • Indiana — No state law prohibits ballot selfies.
  • Kentucky- State attorney general says ballot selfies ARE legal in Kentucky
  • Illinois — State law prohibits “knowingly” marking your ballot so that another person can see it. Violation of the law is classified as a felony, punishable by up to three years in prison.

So if you're in Indiana or Kentucky, selfie away! But if you're in Illinois, do not, I repeat DO NOT TAKE A BALLOT SELFIE!

So there you have it! Happy Election Day, and safe selfies for everyone!
