Each and every year, 911 Gives Hope packs the Ford Center for their annual charity boxing event, Guns & Hoses. The purpose of which isn't for local police, firefighters, and EMTs to release some built-up frustrations by punching each other in the face for a few rounds. While some fighters involved may enjoy that part of it, the main reason they lace up their gloves, step inside the ring, and go toe-to-toe with another local first responder, is for what took place on Saturday during the organization's annual Ride for 911 Gives Hope Motorcycle Ride at Bud's Harley Davidson on Evansville's east side.

Roughly two months after this year's Guns & Hoses took place at the Ford Center in early April, members of the board, including Evansville Police Department Assistant Chief Phil Smith, and Captain Dave Weis with the Evansville Fire Department, invited representatives from the various organizations who had applied for the grant money to join them at Bud's to receive their check.

This year's event raised an incredible, $111,004.73. What makes that amount more impressive is that the 2021 edition had only taken place approximately seven months prior instead of a full year due to COVID pushing it back from its normal early April date to late August.

Organizations who were on hand to receive the money they requested included the Hadi Shriner's Transportation Unit, Easterseals Rehabilitation Center, The Boys & Girls Club of Evansville, Mended Little Hearts, and Youth First, Inc, all of which will use the money to continue their individual missions of providing support and services to special needs children and those who need assistance due to their families financial struggles.

If you or someone you know would like to be considered for a future grant from 911 Gives Hope, visit the grant application page of their website.
