Valentine's Day is a time for love and romance, but if you're like most, it means spending too much money on expensive food, cards, gifts, and flowers.

How to Make Valentine's Day Special with Little Money

It's the simplest thing that can mean so much.

1. Make dinner for each other, with each other

This is an obvious one, but it's also one of the best ways to cut costs. Eating out is so expensive. Instead of going out and spending $50 on dinner at a restaurant, make something special at home. It doesn't matter if it's chicken carbonara or chicken fingers, as long as it's delicious and affordable (and preferably easy), you both win!

2. Have a picnic

Picnic food is easy to find at Costco, Walmart, Kroger, and anywhere, really. You can set up a romantic picnic anywhere. Set it up outside, if the weather is nice, or lay down a blanket on the living room floor, even the bedroom, if it's yucky outside.

3. Watch movies

With Valentine's Day falling on a Sunday this year, it can be a cozy day of rest for you and your Valentine. Get some snacks and drinks that you both like, snuggle up on the couch, put your phones away and watch lovey-dovey movies. But, if action or horror movies turn you on, those will work, too.

4. Make gifts for each other

Make your own gifts for each other and spend zero dollars or just a few dollars, by using things around the house. Use your imagination and be creative, Base your gift on an inside joke or first date reminder, wedding memory, etc.

Or, write a poem or love letter. That will mean so much more than a card someone else wrote that you bought at Walgreens.

 5. Go for a walk

Spend some time together walking on the riverfront or at a park. You can even just take slow a stroll down the sidewalk in front of your house. Hold hands and stop to see the sights. Look into each other's eyes and talk about nothing other than what's happening at the moment There is something to be said for stopping to smell the roses,

In our busy lives, this may be all you need, and it's totally free.

I hope that this list has given you some great ideas on how to celebrate Valentine's Day on a budget. If none of these seem like they would work for you, then just remember that the most important thing is to spend time together as a couple. This is one day when everyone should feel special and loved by their special someone.
