There's a long list of ways people will try to scam you over the phone. Over the years, scammers have gotten really good at tricking people. They are able to alter the information that you see on your phone when a call comes in. This technique, known as "spoofing," is the reason that some unsuspecting individuals fall victim to common scams. Most phone providers will give you a heads-up when you are getting a call from a suspected scammer by displaying "Scam Likely" underneath the number when you receive a call. Even then, that doesn't mean that it can detect all scam calls.

How Many Spam Calls Have Hoosiers Received in 2023

Recently, the website, Stacker, released a list of the states that get the most spam calls. Here's how they did it:

In partnership with Visible, Stacker analyzed the FCC's Consumer Complaints data and ranked each state based on the least to the most spam calls received in 2023 so far. The data is self-reported and does not represent all spam calls. The number of spam calls reported per 100,000 residents determined the states' ranking. The type of call (pre-recorded calls, live voice calls, or text messages) is listed when available. However, not all complaints included the call type, meaning percentages may not add up to 100.

Thankfully, Indiana wasn't ranked near the top of this list. In fact, the state with the most spam calls in 2023 was Colorado. Indiana came in at nuber 37 on the list. While that sounds like it might be "good news," the fact is, we all get way too many scam calls throughout the year. According to Stacker, this is the data regarding spam calls in Indiana:

 • 9 spam calls reported for every 100,000 residents
 • Total spam calls reported so far in 2023: 629
 • Live voice: 181 (28.8% of total)
 • Pre-recorded: 170 (27.0% of total)
 • Text message: 96 (15.3% of total)

Does this data surprise you at all? It certianly doesn't surprise me. Especially considering all the spam calls that I have recieved. You can take a look at the full report from Stacker by clicking here.
