Fact Check: Are Certain Christmas Lights Banned in Indiana?

As if we don't have enough to worry about, there are rumors that certain Christmas lights have been banned by the government. Well, don't throw out your incandescent Christmas lights just yet.

Yes, it is true that there are new energy standards for light bulbs. Most incandescent bulbs do not fit that standard, and so they are no longer being produced. This phase-out of less efficient bulbs just went into effect in August 2023.

Certain Types of Bulbs are Exempt

You might have read some headlines scaring you into throwing out your standard Christmas lights because they are banned. That is very misleading! I did some further research and found out that certain low-wattage incandescent bulbs are exempt from this new energy requirement. This includes specialty incandescent bulbs that are used in ovens, refrigerators, bug lights, and Christmas lights.

While the phase-out of certain wattages of incandescent bulbs has taken place, it is essential to note that not all incandescent bulbs have been completely banned. Specialty incandescent bulbs, such as those used in ovens, refrigerators, and other specific applications, are still permitted for sale.

Christmas lights fall under these lower wattage guidelines so, for now, incandescent bulbs are still available to light rooflines and Christmas trees. For smaller homes and projects they continue to be an economical choice for many first-time Christmas lights installers.

That's right. Our incandescent Christmas lights can shine bright like Rudolph's nose! Although, LED bulbs are actually brighter than incandescent ones. Either way, hopefully, this little fact-checking session has saved your Christmas decorating budget.
