Would You Believe You Can’t Pump Your Own Gas in New Jersey?
In 1949 the state of New Jersey passed a law that no gasoline customer could do their own pumping. That law went virtually unnoticed because at that time almost all service stations pumped the gas, however over the years the self service convenience stores popped up and we all began doing the job ourselves. In New Jersey the law didn't change. The main reason given was a matter of safety but the state also opted to protect the minimum wage earners that keep on pumping petrol in the only state that still has the 1949 law. There are many things that are legal in 2019 in New Jersey but loading your gas is not one of them.
