I grew up on South Gibson Street in Princeton. Two houses down from ours, there was a little building call The Salvation Army. The only thing I really knew about it was that some of my friends went to church services on Wednesdays and Sundays. We also had a Salvation Army store that sold used clothing. I also knew that the Salvation Army also gave out food baskets during the holidays, and sometimes they could help with the heating bill during the winter months. But who is this 'Army', and why do they help so many people that don't even go to their church?

The first sentence you see on The Salvation Army website answers the 'WHY'.

The Salvation Army exists to meet human need wherever, whenever, and however we can.

I would describe The Salvation Army as literally an army of officers, ministers, soldiers, and volunteers. Now, they are not out there with weapons of destruction. They fight wars like hunger with meals and food donations. We all have an opportunity to become part of the solution to end hunger in our community.

You've seen the Red Kettles during the holiday season. That helps fund families in need during the winter. Just because the season changes, doesn't mean that families magically have everything they need. We have neighbors that need food assistance daily.

A couple of years ago, I covered a pizza giveaway event with Little Caesars. You know, their pizzas are only $5, but they are so good! Imagine not having an extra $5 to pick up a pizza for your family. Everyone that enjoyed that free lunch was so thankful and appreciative. I wish we could do that every week.

That's why I'm happy to tell you about a one-day event to help fight the 'War on Hunger' Friday, April 9, 2021. All six Schnuck's locations in Evansville and Newburgh will be collecting cash and checks for The Salvation Army.

This will allow the volunteers to purchase the food people here in the community needs. I really hope that as you buy your weekly groceries, and think about how you are going to plan meals for your family, that you also think about the families in Vanderburgh and Warrick counties that don't have the same luxury.

The Salvation Army still holds weekly religious services:
