The Evansville Otters begin the 2012 season tonight at Bosse Field at 6:35 pm against the Washington Wild Things. If the exhibition season was any indication, the Otters should have great year. Otter baseball is the single best family value in Evansville...period! Historic Bosse Field is a great place to see a game because there is no such thing as a bad seat at Bosse which is the third oldest active baseball stadium in America, second only to Fenway Park in Boston and Wrigley Field in Chicago. Bosse Field also provided the backdrop for the 1992 motion picture, A League of Their Own which starred Tom Hanks, Madonna and Geena Davis. In the movie, Bosse was the home field of the Racine Belles and was the site of the World Series portion of the film.

One of the most memorable characters in the movie was the bratty 'Stillwell Angel Gardner', who was the son of Peaches right-fielder Evelyn Gardner. We will never forget him in the dugout before the start of the World Series game saying over and over...."You're gonna lose". Stillwell was played by Posey County's very own Justin Scheller who had no prior acting experience.

Scheller was one of about 800 kids who auditioned for the role at Central High School. Scheller is a graduate of North Posey High and USI. As of 2009 Scheller was an asst. track coach at North Posey and has not acted since. He does however, get paid every time the movie airs.....not too shabby.

2012 marks the 20th anniversary of A League of Their Own and the movie will be shown at Bosse Field on June 22nd even though the Otters will be on the road that night in Southern Illinois.

Some of the really big nights at Bosse are 'Thirsty Thursdays' with $1 drafts, $1 peanuts on Mondays, $1 popcorn on Tuesdays and $1 hot dogs on Wednesdays. Otter baseball is the perfect family activity and they are home all this weekend with the first pitch at 6:35 pm tonight and tomorrow, 6:05 pm on Sunday. I'll be there with my family all season and I hope to see you there as well......PLAY BALL!!!!!
