Last week we shared a pretty unique good news story proving that timing and determination can make for some amazing experiences.

When You See a Chance Take It

I know that most people would not approach a celebrity or a public figure just to ask for a selfie. I am definitely not one of those people. I know that might seem a bit extra, but how else would we get awesome photos like this one with Peyton Manning?

Once in a Lifetime Request

So, when I heard about 8-year-old Ethan Geertz of Lexington, Kentucky asking the Pope for a selfie, I had to share his story. News station WKYT shared the video with the Geertz family, detailing how this once-in-a-lifetime request became a reality.

Core Family Memories

So, a few years back, the Geertz family made a promise to themselves that they were going to invest in memories. And for spring break 2025, that meant a dream trip to Italy, including an amazing tour of Vatican City. I cannot even begin to imagine a trip like that. I mean, the architecture and the beauty of the city is something that most of us can only dream of.

But First, a Selfie

I must say that Ethan Geertz is my personal hero. Why? Just as they were wrapping up their tour, the family noticed a bit of excitement building in the crowd. Ethan's mom Melissa figured maybe a cardinal was passing through. But her 8-year-old son Ethan said 'I'm gonna take a selfie with the pope,’ and his mom told him, ‘Not in a million years, buddy.’

Divine Intervention

This gives me chills to even think about, but Pope Francis started making his way through the crowd. And out of everyone there, he called Ethan over! You have goosebumps, too, right?

Pope Francis asked Ethan his name and said, “Nice to meet you.” Ethan said it was “really cool and really nice.". And when Ethan's mom asked why he thought the pope picked him? He simply said, “Because I’m small.”
