Unauthorized Look Inside Abandoned Bum’s Castle In Illinois

Sometimes when I see an unusual landmark in Illinois, the first thing that comes to mind is wanting to see what's inside and in this case, that opportunity is actually available.

What Is Bum's Castle In Illinois

Through the years, I've seen many pictures of this landmark in Illinois. It stuck out to me because it looks like a castle. Unfortunately, until recently I didn't know anything about the place. Now, I do, and since it's such a cool-looking building in the photos I thought I would share that info with you.

It's funny with just the look of the place, I thought it would've had a special history but it really doesn't. It was originally a grain elevator made of wood that burned down twice. When it was rebuilt the third time, they made it out of concrete.

Believe it or not, there was another fire. This time the structure stayed standing but everything inside was destroyed. The agriculture industry changed quite a bit so that time it wasn't rebuilt.  It became an abandoned building where bums live hence the name Bum's Castle.

According to chicagotribune.com,

While it’s been abandoned for many decades, Bum’s Castle has become a landmark structure.

 

It’s a prominent scene for riders on Metra’s Electric District trains and can be viewed by the millions of motorists traversing I-80 every year.

Bum's Castle Is Located In Illinois' Worst City

The whole thing is so fitting. A place named Bum's Castle is located in Harvey, which is considered if not the worst, at least one of the worst cities in the whole state. After reading about that town, I definitely don't feel bad about Rockford.

According to roadsnacks.com,

Part of a web of suburbs just south of Chicago, Harvey sits in the northeast part of the state, close to the Indiana border.

 

The area is known for its severe problems with poverty and crime, making it one of the worst places to live in Illinois.
