Students, staff, and residents near the University of Evansville should expect a heavy law enforcement presence on campus next week, as multiple agencies participate in a large-scale emergency response training exercise.

According to the university, the training drill is being conducted on Wednesday, May 13, in partnership with the Evansville Police Department, Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office, and other emergency personnel.

University officials say the majority of the training is expected to wrap up by noon.

Tactical Officers and Loud Noises Expected During the Drill

Officials say officers participating in the exercise will wear full tactical gear, including helmets, vests, and uniforms, while responding to a simulated threat scenario designed to feel as realistic as possible.

Residents and people near campus may also notice marked police vehicles and hear loud noises generated by blank rounds being used during the exercise. The university emphasizes that no live ammunition or live munitions will be used during the training.

The drill is part of ongoing efforts to improve coordination between emergency responders and university staff while testing campus emergency response procedures.

Several Areas of Campus Will Be Used During the Exercise

According to UE, the main locations involved in the drill will include the Koch Center for Engineering and Science and the Sesquicentennial Front Oval.

The university says that "Emergency Drill in Progress" signs will also be posted near the southeast corner of campus around the intersection of Weinbach and Lincoln Avenues to alert drivers and pedestrians to the activity.
