What Are the Requirements to Become an Indiana State Police Trooper?

There are some non-negotiable requirements to become an Indiana State Trooper. For example, you do have to be a US citizen between the ages of 21 and 40 with a valid driver's license and a high school diploma or GED. You also must have "vision correctable to 20/50," and be willing to reside and serve anywhere in Indiana. In addition to these basic requirements, there are also a number of others that involve physical and mental acuity.

What Is The Pay for an Indiana State Police Trooper?

The base salary for an ISP Trooper Trainee is $66,000 per year, plus overtime and bonuses totally up to $69,800. A Probationary Trooper's base salary is $70,000 + a one-time bonus of $5,000 after graduating from the academy.

What Kind of Benefits Package Do Indiana State Police Trooper's Receive?

In addition to their salary an Indiana State Police Trooper receives a competitive benefits package.

Recruits of the 86th Recruit Academy are offered an excellent health care plan, including medical, dental, vision, and pharmacy coverage for current and retired employees, along with their families, until reaching age 65.  The Indiana State Police pension program provides a lifetime pension after 25 years of service.  Additionally, the Indiana State Police Department provides comprehensive disability coverage and a life insurance program.

What Happens After You Submit an Indiana State Police Trooper Application?

If you are selected to proceed you will be expected to complete the Written Examination and Physical Abilities Test on either Friday, May 3, 2024, or Saturday, May 4, 2024, at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy located in Plainfield, Indiana. Both phases must be completed to continue to the next phase. Additional information, along with instructions, will be sent via email to applicants by the end of business Wednesday, May 1, 2024.
