If haunted houses and jump scares aren't really your thing, there are plenty of other ways to embrace spooky season in Evansville.

Haunted Historic Evansville has shared three October events happening in the city's Riverside Historic District, and each one combines a little Halloween fun with some of Evansville's history.

You can learn how Victorians mourned the dead, hear ghost stories while walking through one of Evansville's historic neighborhoods, or spend Halloween night watching The Phantom of the Opera.

Here's what's happening.

The House in Mourning - A Victorian Funeral

Throughout October, the Reitz Home Museum will transform into The House in Mourning - A Victorian Funeral.

Visitors will get a look at the traditions, customs, and rituals surrounding death and mourning during the Victorian era.

The experience will be available throughout the month during regular tour hours at the Reitz Home Museum, located at 112 Chestnut Street in Evansville.

Haunted Historic Evansville Ghost Walks

The popular Haunted Evansville Ghost Walks return Friday, October 16, and Saturday, October 17.

Rather than a traditional haunted attraction, the walks use a family-friendly theatrical approach to bring stories from the neighborhood's history to life.

Proceeds from the tours benefit Haynie's Corner Arts District, Evansville Civic Theatre, and the Old Evansville Historic Association.

Tickets and additional information are available through Haunted Historic Evansville.

Spend Halloween With The Phantom of the Opera

You can round out spooky season with a pair of classic silent horror films at First Presbyterian Church.

Director of Music Robert Nicholls will provide improvised accompaniment for Faust on Friday, October 30, followed by a particularly appropriate Halloween-night screening of The Phantom of the Opera on Saturday, October 31.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the movies beginning at 7 p.m.

So whether your preferred flavor of spooky is ghosts, Victorian funeral customs, or a century-old horror movie on Halloween night, you can find all three without leaving Evansville this October.
