While holiday shopping sales are well behind us, you can still score some pretty sweet deals after the New Year—you just have to know what to buy.

I don't like shopping. Inflation over the last few years has made my weekly trips to the store a nightmare, which is why I take advantage of any promo code or discount I can find. During the holidays, you can find some really fantastic deals on electronics, home appliances, and clothing, but as January reaches the halfway point, it's safe to say most of those sales are behind us for a bit. However, there are some items that actually tend to be priced lower this time of year, making it a perfect time to stock up.

According to Flagler Credit Union, the beginning of the year is the perfect time to stock up on winter clothing, as stores make room for the new spring lineup. Additionally, the first month of the year is famous for its "white sales," where folks can find deals on soft home goods, like blankets and pillows, with discounts as high as 70% off. Fitness gear also sees higher discounts around the New Year, due to healthy lifestyles being at the top of everyone's New Year's resolutions list. Furthermore, you can score some pretty incredible deals on leftover holiday décor, and even TVs.

What to Avoid Buying in January

While January may see slashed prices on some goods, there are others you may want to avoid buying for the time being. For example, January is perhaps the worst time to buy new spring clothes, as prices will be at their highest due to a brand new lineup. The same is true for new cars. Mattresses are another item you should hold off on, at least until Presidents' Day in February, when, for some reason, retailers offer the biggest discounts on those items. Lastly, avoid shelling out cash on snow gear until the end of the winter season, as you'll see much better prices around that time. Happy shopping, and may you find the best deals!
