Parke County, Indiana

Parke County, Indiana is home to the annual Covered Bridge Festival that thousands attend every year.  The county is also known as the covered bridge capital of the world as 31 covered bridges sit within the Parke County lines.  Not only is Parke County known for its beautiful covered bridges, it's also known for being home to Turkey Run State Park which is well known for its inn, cabins, and campgrounds, however, have you ever heard of Turkey Run State Park's little brother?

Indiana's Best Kept Secret

Located only 5 miles away from Turkey Run State Park sits a lesser-known state park, Shades State Park.  According to Parke County, Shades State Park has been called the "less Popular little brother" to Turkey Run State Park.  They say if you want more adventure like the Six Ravine Challenge (more on that in a minute) or just want to get away and enjoy some serene views, Shades State Park is a must-visit!

Shades State Park

According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Shades State Park is a popular place for hikers and canoeists, but it's still not nearly as busy as other state parks. Even Indiana DNR refers to the park as peaceful because of its quietness.

Shades State Park is that peaceful place you've sought. Located about 17 miles southwest of Crawfordsville (off S.R. 47), it is a favorite for hikers and canoeists.

The beautiful sandstone cliffs overlooking Sugar Creek and numerous shady ravines provide the backdrop for your journey through this nature lover's paradise.

Also on the property is Pine Hills Nature Preserve, which affords spectacular topography for those willing to take a fairly long hike.

It is truly a hidden gem in the Hoosier State.

The Six Ravine Challenge

Now of course Shades State Park is perfect for nature lovers of all kinds, but if you happen to be a little more adventurous you can participate in the Six Ravine Challenge. The Six Ravine Challenge is a loop hike that combines 8 different trails within the park.  It's a 4.42-mile loop, so it will take some time to complete.

The Six Ravine Challenge at Shades State Park is a 4.42 mile loop-hike that combines 8 trails throughout the park. To earn a sticker, cost is $1, you must complete the loop in one consecutive hike and show a photo of all six italicized locations on the map to the Gatehouse, Camp Store or Turkey Run Nature Center. Locations to be photographed include: Shawnee Canyon, Kickapoo Ravine, Frisz Ravine, Kintz Ravine, Silver Cascade Falls and Red Fox Ravine. (Brent Drinkut/Indiana DNR)
