According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, there are 24 state parks in the Hoosier state, which means you have plenty of options for your next state park visit. But if you're looking for some history with your visit, maybe Indiana's oldest state park is the perfect stop for you!

Indiana's Oldest State Park

The oldest state park in Indiana is McCormick's Creek State Park in Spencer, Indiana. On July 4th, 1916, McCormick's Creek State Park officially opened, making it the first state park in Indiana.  A close second is Turkey Run State Park, as it opened later in 1916.

Hike trails featuring diverse forest trees, spicebush, and native wildflowers on an accessible trail at the nature center. Experience history as you climb the fire tower, use shelter houses cross the stone arch bridge created by the Civilian Conservation Corps, or examine the historic Statehouse Quarry, which furnished limestone used for the Indianapolis Statehouse. Relax in the lobby of Canyon Inn, open to all park visitors, or watch birds from the dining room porch as you enjoy a meal.  - Indiana DNR

McCormick's Creek State Park is Open Despite Tornado Damage

In 2023, a massive EF-3 tornado tore through parts of this historic state park.  Unfortunately, two and a half years later, you can still see much of the destruction throughout the park.   Don't let this deter you from visiting.

There is still much to see and do, and many beautiful views throughout McCormick's Creek State Park. Just be sure to check the Indiana DNR website before you go, and pay attention to any barricades.
