You can take a ride in a 1970 UH-1 Huey helicopter at the Evansville Wartime Museum during an upcoming weekend in August.
READ MORE: Evansville Wartime Museum Will Reopen in August
There is an abundance of places to learn about history in the tri-state, and one of my favorites is the Evansville Wartime Museum located at the Evansville Regional Airport. The museum not only honors veterans but also showcases Evansville's industrial footprint during World War II. Volunteers are constantly adding new pieces to the various exhibits, and it's definitely something the whole family can enjoy.
The museum has been closed since April due to storm damage and will reopen on August 3. Along with the reopening, the museum is planning an immersive historical experience as they are set to welcome the crew of the Columbus Indiana 1970 UH-1 Vietnam Huey Helicopter. The crew will be at the museum on Saturday, August 10 and Sunday, August 11, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (CT). Rides in the vintage Huey will be offered at $100 for adults and $50 for students 12 or under. WWII and Korean vets will ride for free.
The helicopter can take up to 8 people per 20-minute flight. I plan to go up there myself, and I can't wait to experience the flight. While I've never been a big fan of heights, riding in a Huey helicopter has been a longtime bucket list item of mine. This will also be my first ride on a helicopter of any kind.
In addition to the helicopter rides, Vietnam Veterans will be onsite to talk about their service and answer questions guests might have. Vietnam re-enactor camps will be onsite, and the Evansville Wartime Museum Grill will even be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to serve burgers, brats, chips, and drinks. Regular admission prices will apply to all visitors. Military veterans with children 5 and under are free. You can learn more about the museum and upcoming events here.
