There's nothing more frustrating than scraping ice off your windshield in the cold of winter. Here's how you can melt the ice faster without the workout.

In previous years, I worked earlier shifts, which meant I had to be in my car heading to work by about 4 a.m. Now, it's hard enough to get up that early as it is, but even harder to do so when it's freezing cold outside. I spent many mornings with an ice scraper in hand, slashing away at the ice that covered the windshield of my truck. It wasn't fun, and it wasn't always the most effective method either. Luckily, there is another way, and chances are, you already have the supplies you need to make it happen.

Easy DIY Solution for Fast Windshield Defrosting

An article from Houska Automotive details a few different ways to combat a frozen windshield, but perhaps their most effective tactic is a homemade de-icer. You can certainly buy this product at the store, but it's often expensive. If you find yourself in a situation with nothing but an ice scraper, this life hack may save you time and even help prevent you from catching a cold.

All you need to do to make an effective de-icing solution is mix two-thirds rubbing alcohol with one-third water. Once mixed, the solution can be easily poured into a spray bottle for use at any time. When you're ready to use it, just shake the bottle and spray the mixture onto the windshield. This usually works pretty quickly, but just remember to store the mixture properly when you're done. You should not keep the de-icer in the vehicle.

Other Tips for Defrosting Your Windshield Fast

There is, of course, more than one way to take care of your icy windshield. If you don't have rubbing alcohol on hand, you might just have another useful bottle nearby—vodka. If you've ever stored vodka, you probably know that vodka doesn’t freeze, making it a good de-icer! All you need to do is mix two parts vodka with one part water. You can then apply it to your windshield via a spray bottle or simply by pouring from a cup.

Houska Automotive notes that you can also use a salt and water solution as another de-icing tactic. However, while it may work well, be warned: if the salt gets on the body of your vehicle, it could damage the paint. You should also avoid throwing hot water onto your windshield, as it could cause the glass to crack from thermal shock. In my opinion, it might be best to stick with a commercial or homemade alcohol-based de-icer.
