You may think that a food shortage is something that couldn't possibly ever happen. But, the scary truth is it has, can, and will happen. This year, 2023 is no exception.

Some things will be hard to find and some things, like eggs affected by the Bird-Flu, will cost you a fortune.

According to Valley Food Storage,

...the current situation with food supplies is, in fact, already dire. The WFP (World Food Programme) predicts that by 2023 there will be a shortage of wheat and corn, which are two staple products in the food supply chain.

With the world population growing, usable farmland diminishing, animal and plant viruses on the rise, and continued world conflicts, our food supply chain is being affected and will continue to be affected, in some way, every year.

Some years, it will be barely noticeable. But in other years, It's really going to hurt both in price and need.

This year, 2023, the food items that will be in short supply are not things we rarely use. We use them all the time. It's going to be really hard to find alternatives, too.

Foods that are going to be in short supply in 2023

I would say to start stocking up on these items, but sometimes that is confused with hoarding. Please take only what you need and leave some for others.

Here are the foods that we may not even find on the shelves and the reasons why.

Bread

The reason - A pending bread shortage is the result of the continued war in Ukraine. Russia and Ukraine account for almost 20% of the world’s grain production.

Champagne and Beer

The reason - The champagne shortage started last year because of a drought. In 2023, you will be able to get some of the bubbly, but it's going to cost you.

Shortages are being tied to aluminum shortages and short the supply of carbon dioxide.

Pet Food

The reason - There is an aluminum shortage, so canned pet food could be harder to come by in 2023. You might want to start making your own dog food.

Canned Food

The reason - All products that are made of tin or aluminum are going to be prone to shortages. That means everything we buy in a can.

Lettuce

The reason - Grocery stores get most of their lettuce from California. But this year’s crop was struck with a virus,

Corn

The reason - The war in Ukraine is, again, the reason. Ukraine is a huge producer of corn. So many things we eat are made with corn. Things like chips, salad dressings, and even carbonated beverages could be in short supply, too.

 Baby Formula

The reason -  Reuters reported that the baby formula shortage from the last couple of years is expected to last through the first several months of  2023, This s due to recalls and a labor shortage.

Prescription Medication

To me, this is the scariest one of the 2023 shortages. Prescription meds aren't food, but I wanted to t the information into this article. The medications include some antibiotics, antivirals, and some ADHD medications. The shortage is being caused by a huge increase in demand.
