Why Do We Have So Much Trash?

It wasn't until I owned my own home that I realized just how essential a trash pickup service is. I like to think I'm not a wasteful person, but the number of times we have to take out a full trash bag in a week at my house says otherwise. It's amazing how fast your big trash cans outside can fill up. There have been more times than I'd like to admit where we've had to start a recycle pile in the garage because we couldn't fit all of our recycles for the week in the designated pickup can. Sometimes I wonder where it all even comes from.

If you live in a home with multiple people (especially littles in diapers), you probably also have felt the overflowing trash can pain. And if you use Republic Services in Evansville, you may need to start that garage recycles pile sooner rather than later, because your service is going to be temporarily delayed.

Evansville Trash Service Temporarily Delayed

In a post on July 28th, Evansville Water and Sewer Utility (EWSU) shared that due to national picketing, Republic Services trash pickup will be delayed temporarily.

As of July 19, 2025, Republic Services and Teamsters Local 215 ratified a 3-year labor agreement. Unfortunately, as of today, July 28, 2025, Teamsters from outside of the Evansville area placed picket lines at both the hauling operation and Laubscher Meadows Landfill.

Local employees are obligated to honor these nationally established picket lines. Services will be delayed with a primary focus on hospitals, long-term care facilities and other critical service needs. Should this situation continue, Republic Services Blue Crew resources will provide collection services. Republic Services will provide daily updates and sincerely apologize for the issues this may cause our customers, employees and residents of the community.

Update from Republic Services at 2:00pm. Republic Services is in contract negotiations with the Teamsters representing some of our employees in the Cumming, GA area. Those employees are engaged in a temporary work stoppage, and some are picketing at two of our Evansville locations. As a result, our employees in Evansville are choosing to not cross the picket line, which is causing service disruptions.

We are making adjustments to our operations and bringing in additional Republic Services employees to assist with collections. Services will be delayed with a primary focus on hospitals, long-term care facilities and other critical customers. We apologize for the inconvenience and are working to resume regular service as quickly as possible.

The picketing is unrelated to Evansville Teamsters Local 215, who ratified a 3-year agreement in July 2025.
