I had no idea that you could do this, and I imagine that there are quite a few people who didn't know either.

Earlier today, Evansville-Vanderburgh Central Dispatch posted on Facebook to remind residents that you can text 911 in Vanderburgh County if you have an emergency.

This got me wondering if Vanderburgh County was the only county in Indiana with these capabilities. As it turns out, you can text 911 in all 92 counties. It's something that has flown under the radar for a few years now, and people should know that they have this option in a time of emergency.

This 'Text to 911' program is perfect for those who may be hearing and speaking impaired. It also is a good idea to use in dangerous situations where you don't want to risk the noise of a call to 911 for help, such as a hostage or kidnapping situation.

According to Fox59, Indiana dispatchers can also initiate texts after receiving a disconnected or dropped 911 call.

Again, this is something that EVERYONE should know about. You never know when you may need to use the 'Text to 911' feature. Be sure to share this information with others so that they are aware too!
