July 4th is a week away, and if you're like me chances are you LOVE watching the fireworks, but you also do feel a little guilty about loving something that terrifies your pet so much.   The 4th of July is among the top times of year for pets to run off.  They hear the fireworks, and get spooked so they bolt.  Collars can slip off, so make sure your pet is microchipped.  It's the foolproof way to identify your pet.

The absolute best way to take care of your pets on the 4th of July is to keep them inside.  I like to turn the TV up high or leave a radio on for Wrigley, especially on the 4th. This way it muffles the fireworks for her.  She still hears them, but I like to think it helps it not be so startling to her.

But dogs do have to go potty outside, and sometimes it's beyond your control, maybe you take them out on a leash for a second, and they hear the fireworks, the loud noise can disorient them, and they bolt. Or you open your front door and they run out.  It's unfortunately something you have to be extra cautious of, especially around the 4th.

That's why Vanderburgh Humane Society is hosting a pet microchipping clinic TOMORROW June 28 from 1-3PM in the front lobby of the VHS.  It's a low cost clinic, where you can get your pet microchipped for $15 and save 40% off the regular price!

I have Wrigley microchipped, and if she were to ever run off and someone finds her, they can take her to any vet, humane society, or animal control, and they can scan her chip and it will bring up all of my contact info.  It really is a smart move in helping keep your pet safe.
