One website found the "creepiest haunted house" in each state, and Indiana's is actually a library that most of us in southern Indiana are familiar with.

This is the best time of year for a good scare. Haunted attractions are open everywhere. Perhaps you have already visited some. There's not a lack of haunted houses here in  Indiana. In fact, there are so many that you might not have been to the one with the best scares. Of course, these haunted houses aren't actually haunted. As you know, they are full of actors dressed up with the intent to scare you. If you really want to get scared, you might want to visit an actual haunted house with unexplainable noises, voices, and apparitions.

We've been watching a lot of scary movies at my house lately about haunted homes. You've probably seen a lot of movies like that and wondered how you would fare in a real haunted house. Well,  24/7 Wall St. recently compiled a list of the creepiest haunted house in each state. When it comes to Indiana's, it's not a house at all. In fact, it is a library.

The Creepiest Haunted House in Indiana is...

The Willard Library in Evansville was named the 'creepiest haunted house" in Indiana by 24/7 Wall St. Willard Library opened its doors over a century ago, in 1885, making it the oldest operating library in Indiana. When you visit Willard Library the first thing you will notice is the beautiful gothic architecture that gives it a haunted vibe. This is quite a coincidence because Willard Library is also home to the most notorious ghost in the region, the Grey Lady!

Who or What is the Grey Lady?

That's a good question. In fact, according to Willard Library, no one knows who the Grey Lady is for sure, but it is widely speculated that she is the ghost of Louise Carpenter the daughter of Willard Library founder, Willard Carpenter.  The first sighting of The Grey Lady happened in 1937, and this haunting has been pretty well documented ever since. She's been said to be spotted frequently in the children's area of the library. Some of the unexplained occurrences in Willard Library include:

  • Water turned on or off
  • Smell of perfume
  • Feeling of cold
  • Noises
  • Books and furniture found moved
  • A feeling of touch on hair and earrings
  • Odd items found in the library

Many paranormal investigations have taken place at the library, and many have caught evidence of something paranormal on the public ghost cams. Willard Libray also will be hosting Grey Lady Ghost Tours from October 26th to 28th, to see if you can spot the Grey Lady yourself. You can find out more about those by clicking here.
