Incredibly Generous Shoe Shiner Donates $200,000 in Tips to Hospital
Albert Lexie shines shoes, but he brightens up a whole lot more than people’s feet.
Lexie has worked as a shoe shiner for the last 32 years at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. No big deal, you say? Well, it is when you consider that he has donated every single penny in tips he’s made since taking the job in 1981 to the Children’s Hospital Free Care Fund. That’s added up to $200,000. And that money goes directly to parents of sick children who can’t pay their medical bills.
In proof that little drips can fill the sink, Lexie charges $5 for a shine, but customers usually give him $6 or $7. You don’t need to know advanced calculus to know that extra dollar or two snowballed into some serious greenbacks.
One doctor at the hospital tried to explain why Lexie has made himself into such a philanthropist, by saying, “I think he does it because he loves the kids. He’s donated over a third of his lifetime salary to the Children’s Hospital Free Care Fund.”
Way to go, Albert.

Wednesday from 6am-6pm, all the media outlets pooled their efforts to raise funds for victims of the Moore, OK tornado victims and with the help of Tri-State donors, we were able to raise $26,016 just in phone-in donations.
