Hauntings in the Hoosier State

One thing I am a sucker for is a good ghost story.  If you know of a place with a creepy legend, I want to hear it! I just have always found these types of stories so fascinating.  I want to know what happened, who haunts it, and why.  So when I found an article listing the most haunted places in each state, I had to know about the most haunted place in my home state.

The Most Haunted Places in America

While I think we can all agree that the title "Most Haunted" is subjective to personal experiences, some places have become infamous due to the legends surrounding them.  Recently Thrillist scoured the United States to find the most haunted places in the country.  Thrillist named the Avon Bridge the Most Haunted place in the Hoosier state, and the legend behind this bridge is chilling.

Indiana is filled with enough haunted inns and estates to pack a whole town, but for a little skin-crawling outside of a big city, head to the sleepy bedroom community of Avon, home to one of the nation’s creepiest-looking haunted bridges.

 

The Legends Of the Haunted Avon Bridge

The Avon Bridge was built in 1906 and is well known among the locals for the legends surrounding the historic bridge. According to VisitHendricksCounty.com there isn't any written history about why the bridge may be haunted, but local lore says otherwise. There are two legends surrounding the bridge that seem to be the most commonly told.

The Legend of the Lost Mother

Visit Hendricks County shares a few of the legends surrounding the haunted Avon Bridge.  Probably the most notorious legend is of a mother who was walking along the train tracks over the bridge with her infant. The mother slipped and both fell to their deaths.  The legend claims you can still hear the sounds of screams when you drive by the bridge.

The Legend of The Wet Cement Burial

Visit Hendricks County also shares the legend of the drunken rail worker.  According to the story, a rail worker had slipped during the construction of the bridge and was buried alive in the wet cement.  The tale says every time a train goes over the bridge, you can still hear the moans of the rail worker during his untimely death.

These stories and tales of haunted happenings around the bridge are enough to keep me away!
