Martina McBride Admits She Thinks of Her Husband When Singing ‘I’m Gonna Love You Through It’

Martina McBride‘s hit song ‘I’m Gonna Love You Through It’ joins ‘Independence Day’ and ‘Concrete Angel’ as songs from her catalog that carry great social importance on the breath of her soaring melody. McBride — who’s teaming up with General Mills to raise money and awareness for breast cancer this fall — embraces the added responsibility, but says she only picks songs that meet her high expectations.
“I don’t go out looking for that,” she tells Taste of Country. “Like, I never ever go out looking for a specific kind of song or a specific issue. I don’t know why they find me.” McBride says she’s never lost anyone close to her to breast cancer, but family and friends have successfully fought the disease. Surprisingly, someone else who means a great deal to her has inspired the greatest performances of ‘I’m Gonna Love You Through It’ — her husband.
“When I sing the song and really connect with it, it is through the husband. It’s through that chorus that says ‘When you’re weak, I’ll be strong.’ I feel like that’s such a powerful message and it’s just something that I think is so beautiful.”
The Save Lids to Save Lives program allows shoppers to donate $.10 from each item with a pink lid to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. In the past, only Yoplait yogurt has carried the pink lid. This year, the program has expanded to 20 brands, including cereals, canned foods and boxed items like Hamburger Helper. Save the lids from these products to mail in for redemption. Find the address by going to the Save Lids to Save Lives website. Additionally, select Yoplait yogurt products carry a code on the back side of the lid to be entered at SaveLidstoSaveLives.com for an additional $.10. Up to $2.5 million will be donated total.
“I like it because it’s one I can do with my kids,” McBride says. “I think we all search for ways to be engaged and to give back and have little projects that they’re a part of and this is a great way to make that online time something productive.”
General Mills tracks zip codes, so the money you donate will go to your local Susan G. Komen chapter.
Next year, McBride will join George Strait on the Cowboy Rides Away Tour — Strait’s final tour.
