There is a common misconception that  only national and school-funded scholarships are available for students but the truth is, there are lots of local scholarships for students who want to further their education. If you only apply for the national scholarships, you are going up against thousands of competitors. By focusing on applying for local scholarships, you have a better shot at scoring that scholarship and money for college.

Here is a list of a few local scholarships that many local teens will qualify for. Make sure to watch your deadlines though! For help with filling out scholarship applications or to find a list of more local scholarships, visit your school guidance counselor or SICAN.

Ronald McDonald House Charities Scholarship

Deadline: January 21, 2014
Scholarship Amount: various amounts

To apply for an RMHC scholarship, a student must be a high school senior who is younger than 21 years old and be eligible to attend a two or four-year college, university or technical school with a full course of study. Evansville Teachers Federal Credit Union (ETFCU) Ted Hitch Scholarship

Deadline: January 31, 2014
Scholarship Amount: $5,000

Seniors who apply for this scholarship must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 at the end of the fall semester. Students should submit an essay, two letters of reference, and the application form to their guidance office who will complete the school section of the application and return all documents along with a transcript to ETFCU. Indiana Conservation Officer Thomas J. Deniston Scholarship

Deadline: March 15, 2013
Scholarship Amount: $500

Each year, the Indiana Conservation Officer Organization awards two different scholarships. One of these scholarships is for the general public, while a second scholarship is awarded to a dependent of an Indiana Conservation Officer.
