Several area kids joined Mayor Lloyd Winnecke and other Evansville officials for the official groundbreaking of the new Mickey's Kingdom Playground in Evansville Wednesday evening.

Following statements by the Mayor, Evansville Parks Department Executive Director, Brian Holtz, and Evansville Police Department Sergeant Jason Cullum, the kids grabbed their golden shovels and broke ground for the first step in what will become a premiere recreational destination along the Evansville riverfront for all families.

During the brief press conference just before the groundbreaking, Parks Department Director Holtz discussed the project's need for approximately 3,500 volunteers of all skill levels over the course of the upcoming 10-day Community Build scheduled to begin September 14th, as well as the purchase of personalized paving stones that will help be on display all around the proposed 20,000 square foot park.
