Jana Kramer's "I Got the Boy" is a song about seeing a past lover move on. The singer chatted with Taste of Country Nights host Sam Alex about the boy who inspired the tune.

Songwriters tend to take a lot away from their personal experiences, and Kramer's "I Got the Boy" is no different. The guy she's talking about in the song is a real ex-boyfriend of hers — her high school sweetheart, in fact.

“It is a true story," the soon-to-be-married singer tells Alex. "It’s actually about my high school sweetheart, Matthew, so we dated for three and a half years in high school and then this song is 100% our love story. So it hits home pretty good.”

Kramer was considerate before she dropped the song. She let Matthew know that he was the subject of her upcoming single, and surprisingly, he didn't mind.

“I was like, ‘Hey, just so you know like I’m gonna be saying your name, so if anyone comes up to you or that you work with ... this song is about you,’" Kramer explains. "He was like, ‘I love it. It’s a great song.’”

Kramer and her high school sweetheart still keep in contact on Facebook, but that's about the extent of their relationship these days. And no, she wasn't in attendance in at his wedding.

“I’m sure his wife would not have wanted me at their wedding,” Kramer declares, laughing. “100% no. We are Facebook friends, that’s probably as close as we’ll ever be again."

The country singer is due to be married very soon.

Sam Alex is the host of Taste of Country Nights radio, a syndicated night show which airs on more than 60 Townsquare Media Group stations nationwide.
