The American flag is the symbol of our country, and as such it should be treated with respect.  I feel no day is better than Flag Day to talk about some basic American Flag etiquette.

I was raised by a dad who takes this very seriously.  From a young age, my dad has always had a flag out in front of our house, and he takes care of it with the utmost respect, and taught me to do the same.

Here's a few basic flag etiquette tips we should all know.

  • The flag should be lighted at all times, either by sunlight or by an appropriate light source.
  • The flag should be flown in fair weather, unless designed for inclement weather.
  • The flag should not be used for any decoration in general.  Bunting of red, white, and blue strips is available for these purposes, and the blue stripe should be on top.
  • the flag is only flown upside down as a distress signal
  • The flag should be cleaned and mended whenever necessary
  • When no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country due to the flag being too worn, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner.

These are just a few basic tips for flying ole glory.  I got these tips from Usa-Flag.org you can read more on flag etiquette here.
