How to Help Your Child Avoid Back-to-School Stress

The first day of school can be rough on kids – especially if they are starting somewhere new. As a parent, you want them to succeed and feel confident on their first day. Set the tone for the rest of the year and follow these easy steps and don’t forget to join us at the Back-to-School Expo School sponsored by EVSC to get your family prepared for the 2013-2014 school year. On Saturday, July 27th, come get back in the swing with the 4th annual Back to School Expo at Eastland Mall from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m..

1. Tour the Building Beforehand

If your child is starting in a new place, they probably will have a lot of anxiety the first day if they are thrust into a totally new environment. Nothing prepares you more than doing a dry run. Find all your classrooms and even the cafeteria, gym and other important rooms ahead of time. If you are going to college, make sure you check out the campus and take a map with you if one is available.

2. Bring Paper, Pencils and a Tic Tac

This may sound very elementary but you’d be surprised how many people forget these basics on the first day – especially if you are stressed about starting somewhere new. Make sure the kiddos have their essentials ready. BONUS: Slip a tic-tac or two into their lunch or pencil case for an after-lunch confidence boost!

3. Spring for the Cool Threads

It may sound completely shallow, but let your kid feel extra confident on the first day of school. If you can, just go ahead and get the name brand outfit for that special day.

4. Send a Love Note

If your child is old enough to have a cell phone, send them a text that tells them that you are thinking about them, care about them and hope they have a good day. If they are too little for technology, leave a note in their backpack or lunchbox. It’s always comforting to know someone, somewhere loves you.

5. Celebrate the First Day

The first day of school can be stressful for kids or even college students. Celebrate in style by making their favorite dinner, going to a favorite restaurant, playing a board game, playing catch, or by renting a favorite movie.
