Fireworks Safety Takes on a Whole New Meaning This Year During the Evansville Heatwave

Oakland City Fireworks Grand Finale (Photo/Annie Jenkins)

As kids, we saw the rules associated with fireworks as a way of spoiling our fun. After a couple of close calls with nearly blowing our fingers off we learned that there’s probably a good reason to play it safe. Fireworks after all are well-trained explosives.

This year we’re not only concerned about the possible injuries and burns that can come about from messing around with fireworks, we’re also concerned now about the extreme risk of fire. We’re in a drought and that won’t change before the 4th.

Some cities have banned private use of fireworks altogether while others have even cancelled their community displays. Even Holiday World has determined that it is not worth the risk and have cancelled their annual display.

Evansville Fire Chief Mike McConnelly is not going to ban private use of fireworks, but he does stress the need for caution and for parental supervision. In fact, state law requires that a person over the age of 18 be present when a person under 18 is using or in possession of fireworks.

Indiana state law also restricts fireworks use to 9 AM until 11 PM. On 4th of July use is allowed until midnight. Use of fireworks is restricted to the users property or property where the user has been granted permission to use fireworks.

The state can impose a fine of up to $500 for violations and the penalties become more severe when there is property or bodily injury.

Have a safe and happy 4th of July!
