What I wouldn't give for a Trader Joe's to open up in Owensboro!

Growing up, my dad did a lot of the purchasing for our local Wetzel's Supermarket. Any time we went on vacation, we would find a grocery store Owensboro didn't have. Sometimes Mom and I would tag along (I loved a Piggly Wiggly) or he would drop us off at the beach. He would spend hours looking around at what items were new and interesting that could possibly make their way to Wetzel's shelves. Dad also looked at how things were merchandised or sales the stores were having for inspiration.

He would think it was funny that we still love to visit different grocery stores when traveling. One of those is Trader Joe's! They always have the best unique snacks and an amazing selection of healthier products. Not to mention the pricing on staple items stays pretty low compared to other places. Versions of their famous Speculoos Cookie Butter and Everything but the Bagel seasoning have made their way to "regular" stores because they've become so popular.

I wish we didn't have to venture all the way to Louisville to shop there. Every time someone posts on social media asking what store folks wish would come to town, Trader Joe's is mentioned in the comments. I am in agreement!

At the beginning of the year, Trader Joe's announced they would begin building a "Mid-America Hub" for their stores right here in Kentucky. According to WBKO, they are nearing completion of the first phase of the process which will open January 1st, 2024. While this project includes three distribution centers totaling approximately one million square feet, it is strictly for behind-the-scenes operations. The great news is that they are estimating this new facility will bring roughly 800 jobs to the area.

The even better news is that we are one step closer to having a Trader Joe's retail location closer to Western Kentucky. Dennis Griffin, Franklin-Simpson Industrial Authority Executive Director told WBKO, "This facility opens up for Franklin to have a location, possibly Owensboro, Paducah, maybe even Hopkinsville, those towns. I think the purpose of this facility is to allow them to expand their market."

While no one has confirmed anything just yet, I am going to cross all of my fingers and toes so that this comes to fruition.
