Brantley Gilbert played quite a trick on his girlfriend before surprising her with a ring earlier this fall. The singer shared the details behind his engagement, including who else was there and what song he sang for his bride-to-be.

While the 'One Hell of an Amen' singer announced the engagement last month, he actually popped the question on Sept. 21. "We didn't tell anybody for awhile," he reveals to Taste of Country Nights radio host Sam Alex. "We just wanted to spend some time being engaged and as normal as possible."

His parents and her mother were there when the singer popped out from behind a speaker at the church where he first met her many years ago. The future Mrs. Gilbert -- he hasn't revealed her name yet -- thought her man was hunting.

"I was sending her pictures from last year in Chicago, where I had face paint on. I was hunting in Illinois," he explains. "Like walking her through the hunt, step by step, like, 'We're stalking this ...'"

Yes, it does get better. Gilbert wrote and sang a song for his fiancee and her late father, who died 18 months ago. He didn't get a chance to ask for his blessing, so he sang a song called 'Your Little Girl.'

"I'm a lucky man she said 'Yes,'" Gilbert assures. "I ask her if she's sure every day."

Don't look for the new queen of the BG Nation at the CMA Awards. They plan to take it slow, but babies are a possibility. The country star told Taste of Country being he wants to start a family, but it will be awhile.

Sam Alex is the host of Taste of Country Nights radio, a syndicated night show which airs on more than 60 Townsquare Media Group stations nationwide.
