Memorial Day is over, but the actions of a 9-year-old boy from Kingston, Mass. reminds us all about the meaning of Memorial Day. Brendan Haas is in many respects a typical 9-year-old, except for what he gave the family of a soldier killed in Afghanistan, a complete Disney World trip including airfare, hotel, park access and $900 worth of Disney certificates. It all started when Brendan created a Facebook page called 'Soldier for a Soldier' that basically involves trading an item up for something better and bigger, and in this case, it started with a toy soldier. Brendan kept trading on a national level until he secured the Disney package.

Brendan then announced on the FB page that he would donate his prize and the nominee submissions began arriving via FB and e-mail. Brendan put the nominees in a hat and drew a winner.

The winner was 2-year-old Liberty Hope Steele of Duxbury, Mass. Liberty Hope is the daughter of U.S. Army Lt. Timothy Steele who was killed in Afghanistan last year, he was 25. On Memorial Day, Brendan made the trip to the Steele home to personally present the trip to Lt. Steele's family.

Eric Haas said of his 9-year-old son, "Little people can do a lot of things if they put their mind to it".  Not surprising were the number of posts on the 'Soldier for a Soldier' wall thanking Brendan for what he did. One man, Bob Wade wrote, "If everyone was like Brendan there would be no wars". Well said Mr. Wade, we agree. See the news coverage of Brendan's gesture below.
