There are some things that must be left behind when packing for a camping trip, like the toilet and washing machine, but with a little ingenuity you can bring all the comforts of home with you without taking up too much space in the car or spending money on fancy gadgets.

1. Washing Machine

Being able to wash your clothes will allow you to pack lighter and smell less. Put a hole in the lid of a large bucket, fill it with your dirty clothes, some water, and detergent, and agitate the clothes by sticking a clean bathroom plunger through the hole.

2. Toilet

Cut a hole out of the seat of a lawn chair, place a bucket underneath, and you have yourself a toilet free of squatting, poison ivy or wandering too close to wildlife. Add a padded toilet seat for extra comfort.

3. Sink

Clean out a large laundry detergent dispenser and fill it with water, and you can wash your hands under the spout. Remember to bring soap!

4. Mattress

An inflatable mattress can go a long way in improving your sleeping comfort, but if you don't want to have to pack a pump, bring along some yoga mats instead. All you have to do is roll them out.

5. Shower

Probably the one thing campers miss the most from home is a hot shower. Building a shower outdoors is more complicated than any of the other hacks, but the extra effort will pay off. Learn how to make one using a compressed-air sprayer here.
