Mt. Vernon, IN

Mount Vernon, Indiana is a small city nestled in the ‘point’ of the state and is within Posey County. It was founded in 1816. It is near the borders of both Kentucky and Illinois. The city has a population of around 6,502 people. It is widely known for the Port of Indiana - Mount Vernon which has the largest amount of coal shipped through it out of any port in the United States.

The city is located on the Ohio River. Mount Vernon recently renovated their riverfront and it includes both an outdoor playground and a small amphitheater. This spot is a very popular hangout and is where the annual ‘River Days’ festival is held as well as the city’s yearly fireworks show for Independence Day.

The school district in Mount Vernon is the ‘Metropolitan School District of Mount Vernon’. Marrs Elementary, Farmersville Elementary, and West Elementary are the public elementary schools that feed into Mount Vernon Junior High School and, conversely, Mount Vernon Senior High School. St. Matthew’s is a prominent private school in Mount Vernon, and many students from here also attend the city’s junior high and high school. Many businesses in the city show their support for the school district by demonstrating school spirit. The Mount Vernon Wildcats are certainly backed by their community.

There are many notable stops around the city. Hawg ‘N’ Sauce is a popular restaurant that often holds concerts during their ‘patio nights’ over the summer. The Alexander Public Library is a great place to find a great book and it also has a large outdoor play area. Additionally, the Posey County Courthouse is a common symbol of the city and is centrally located in the town square.
