It is Good Friday and Leslie and I got into a spirited discussion with listeners this morning about a story out of Washington State with regard to using the word 'Easter' with eggs, candy and egg hunts. Officials in Edmonds, Wash. issued a directive that Easter egg hunts will be known only as egg hunts and the city's candy-fest needs to be more inclusive of other faiths.
In case you haven't noticed, costumed characters can be super creepy. Remember those scary Santas? It's the stuff of nightmares. Unfortunately, the Easter Bunny is no exception.
If you haven't seen this before, now is the time to watch it. It's a piece of video art by Lernert Engleberts and Sander Plug as part of a preschool art project called "Big Art for Little People."
Easter's right around the corner, so it's time to get into the holiday spirit. Create some awesome eggs, stuff yourself with Peeps--whatever floats your Easter boat. If none of this prep works for you though, we say take a cue from these Easter bunny babies.
The Easter practice of egg decorating has meaning behind it: the egg itself represents rebirth, something early Pagans celebrated during the spring season, and was later adopted by Christians to represent the resurrection themes of the Easter holiday. Though technically a religious holiday, Easter has become more synonymous with milk chocolate candies in the shapes of eggs and bunnies, fruity snacks in springy hues and all sorts of decadent desserts. Stock up on the goods in stores, but also think about making a few of your own delectable treats this year.

You've probably even posed with the Easter bunny, or at least passed one or two in the mall. But do you know why Easter is affiliated with such unique traditions?
