Here’s What to Do if You Find Baby Opossums Without a Mom
Trying to find a litter of newborn baby opossums a safe place to go was not on my Easter bingo card. In fact, I straight up can't stand opossums. How can you trust a rodent with a silent 'O'?
Yardwork Leads to Opossom Litter
This morning we discovered a giant opossum that was run over and left for dead right in front of our mailbox - Gross. my husband shoveled it over into a grassy area and noticed that this was a mama who had babies. Oh goodness. As much as I don't like them, I have learned a lesson or two about animals growing up with no mom. When I saw that a tiny one was actually trying to climb a tree, I knew we couldn't let them just die. We didn't know how many there actually were.
Social Media to The Rescue
Ask a question on social media and boom, you get all of the answers. I am quite thankful for that because we had no idea who to call or how to save the babies. I found out that Christine Bush is a Department of Natural Resources-permitted wildlife rehabilitator. I chatted with her and if we could get the serving babies to her assistant, they would take them in.
Opossum Possie
My son's girlfriend, her aunt, and her mom were immediately on board to help. There was no way that I was going to scoop them up. I'm helping from a distance. I've never seen three people more excited to see tiny little rodents. It was like we were in the baby section at the hospital!
Awesome Possum Update
The box of ten baby opossums made it safely to be taken care of. Turns out, they are actually about 2 months old. Their eyes are starting to open, and they were hissing for Mama. Ok, I'm not crying - It's just allergies.
