Seriously? This Is Kentucky’s Top Karaoke Choice?

As a self-proclaimed karaoke queen, I'd like to think I have my finger on the pulse of the scene. In my opinion, the hardest thing about karaoke is not mustering the courage to sing your heart out in front of a rowdy group of strangers, it is song choice.

What makes a song a good karaoke song?

I normally prefer an upbeat song unless the singer can deliver on the vocals and emotional delivery of a ballad. Honestly, the most important thing is that it's a song everyone knows and can sing along to. That way, no matter how awful the singer is, nobody really cares. Everyone is having a blast and totally missing the notes that don't quite hit the mark.

The last time I went to Brew Bridge in Owensboro, the patio was hopping with music, friendly folks, and good vibes. Singers performed everything from Disney songs, to Chappell Roan, to Paramore, to Whitney Houston. There were a couple of country songs thrown in there, too.

The Most Popular Karaoke Song in Kentucky

You know what song I have NEVER heard at karaoke? The one that claims to be the most popular choice in Kentucky. My Old Kentucky Home. There's no way people are actually singing this on karaoke night unless they have been over-served or at a Derby party. Or both, lol! According to my Google search results, "This state song is often performed at karaoke nights with pride and reverence."

I guess I figured it would be a song that people actually listen to regularly. Like Chris Stapleton's Tennessee Whiskey, or Tyler Childers' Whitehouse Road. Or some throwback Kentucky Headhunters or Loretta Lynn. Loretta is a go-to for me when I grab the karaoke mic, for sure.
