Yesterday, my friend Katie McPherson Daniels shared a scary but amazing story. It all started when she heard her dog, Mia, barking outside.

"She is one of my rescues," Katie told me. "Pit and cane corso (they think) mix. She’s a big girl who has a strong personality." Mia and the family's other dog, a Boston Terrier named Enzo, were once enemies. "It took over a year for them to be able to be in the same room. We just gave them the time they needed, and one day, magically, they were fine and are best friends."

Thursday morning, Katie let Mia and Enzo outside in the backyard to play while she made her coffee. While standing in the kitchen, she heard Mia barking over and over, which was not normal for her. Katie knew something was wrong, so she went to look out the window. "Enzo was paddling to keep his head above water in the deep end of my pool!" she told me. Mia was standing right by where he was in the pool, just barking up a storm.

Katie ran out and scooped Enzo out of the water and onto the ground. He just trotted away like it was nothing while Mia followed him poking him with her snout to make sure he was OK. "He could have drowned. He hates the pool, so not sure how he fell in. Mia just saved his little life! She’s so freaking smart." Enzo is perfectly fine.  Mia will continue to take her lifeguard job seriously. Katie shared that she has always watched the pool while her family is swimming.

Good girl, Mia! I know your mama already spoils you rotten, but I bet you're gonna get a special treat for being a hero! Your bestie, on the other hand, is getting a life jacket! And probably a treat too, let's be honest. Moral of the story: adopt a rescue dog. They'll save you in more ways than one.
