This Outdated Fashion Accessory is Making a Comeback

There are certain fashion trends that I wish would stay gone forever. Stirrup pants, low-rise jeans, and JELLY SHOES were the WORST ever. They'd give you blisters and make your feet sweaty and stinky.

We suffered through for the sake of the outfit, but was it really worth it? I recently came across a video of a gal who claimed she was going to help bring back a piece of clothing I haven't seen worn unironically in decades. The Dickey (Or dickie or dicky, however you spell it). She called it a "faux turtleneck."

I don't think I would classify a dickey as a shirt because, well...there are no arms...or the rest of the shirt. It wouldn't be classified as a necklace or a scarf, even though it is just worn around the neck. It's a turtleneck or collar for people who don't want to wear a whole turtleneck. You get the look without the extra layer of clothing. I'm hot-natured, so I totally get it.

He may not love this, but the last time I saw someone wear a dickey, it was my husband. We went to an ugly Christmas sweater party, and I decorated one to wear over another shirt. He joked about how funny it would be if he just wore that and nothing else. So that is what he did.

It was hysterical. He's an introvert at heart, but he strutted his stuff around that party! There were jingle bells attached, so every once in a while, he would give a little shimmy. It was GREAT.

Obviously, that is not how it is meant to be worn. I remember their popularity in the 80s and 90s when they were worn under crewneck sweatshirts and seasonal sweaters. My mom had a TON of them in all kinds of colors and fabrics. I remember she had a gold one that I thought was so fancy, and a couple of embroidered collars for the holidays.

They go all the way back to the 1820s, so I guess it would make sense for them to have another moment in the 2020s! Amazon has a large assortment of them, as well as Etsy, and there are even dedicated online shops specifically for dickeys. So maybe they didn't really go anywhere after all? I think I may have to get me a few. You couldn't always make your own!
