Creating Core Memories at the Movies

The first time I saw Inside Out, I was intrigued by the concept of "core memories." At the time, I'd never really thought about those few memories from childhood that popped up every now and then and gave me waves of nostalgia. It was just something that happened, but that movie gave me a name to go with my feelings.

My Core Movie Memories as a Kid

Several of my core memories are tied to the movies, probably because my family didn’t go often, so when we did, it was a huge treat.

I remember my elementary school taking us to see the latest Disney movie each Christmas. I remember watching movies under the stars at the Holiday Drive-In with my best friend. I remember seeing my all-time favorite movie, Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken, one summer in the theater. It was so hot and muggy outside. We slipped into the cool, dark theater, feasted on popcorn, and I chugged a Cherry Coke (soda was another rarity in my childhood). I even got to pick out a candy - Junior Mints. My movie menu has become a ritual I still follow to this day.

Why Going to the Movies Still Feels Special

These days, we go to the movies quite a bit, and though you'd think it might get old, it never does. That said, it can get a little pricey, especially if you’re like me and want the full experience, and you have kids in tow.

Affordable Summer Movie Deals for Families

Luckily, a few local theaters are stepping up to help parents fight off the summer doldrums without breaking the bank.

Malco in Owensboro has announced their 2025 Summer Family Movie Festival.
AMC Theatres has now joined the fun, offering budget-friendly summer movies for families as well. For only $3 per person, you can catch them here in Evansville. Not a kid? AMC also offers various other discounts for students, seniors, and on select days/times.
