Southern Indiana Baseball Team Seeking National Anthem Singers
High School Choir Memories and a Surprise Solo
Back in high school, I spent four years in Choir with Sheila Miller at Daviess County High School. I absolutely loved my time in both the choir and our traveling competition group. But I’ll be the first to admit I’m not a great singer, and solo stuff just isn’t my favorite. So when I was asked to sing the National Anthem at a soccer game, I almost said no. But I sucked it up and sang it for the 30 people in attendance. It was exhilarating, a total thrill! I’ll never forget it and I’ll never do it again!
If you are braver than I and can hit that high note, your talents have been requested by the Dubois County Bombers baseball team.

What’s the Story Behind the Star-Spangled Banner?
We’ve all heard the National Anthem a million times, but do you actually know the story behind it?
Francis Scott Key’s View from Behind the British Fleet
According to History.com, most people think Francis Scott Key was locked up on a British ship when he wrote it, but that’s not quite true. Key was a lawyer from Washington, D.C., and was sent by President James Madison in 1814 to help free Dr. William Beanes, a respected surgeon captured after the Battle of Bladensburg. Key was able to negotiate his release, but he wasn’t allowed to go ashore until after the British attack on Baltimore. He watched the battle from behind the 50-ship British fleet.
From “Defence of Fort M’Henry” to National Anthem
Even though he was a lawyer, Key also wrote lyrics and poetry and wrote it as lyrics to accompany the tune of a popular song. It was first published as “Defence of Fort M’Henry,” but eventually became known as “The Star-Spangled Banner.” It wasn’t officially our national anthem until 1916, when President Woodrow Wilson signed an executive order.

Step Back in Time: A League of Their Own Game in Huntingburg
I recently wrote an article about League Stadium in Huntingburg hosting an A League of Their Own exhibition game this summer. See the Racine Belles battle it out with the Rockford Peaches just like you would have in the 1940s.
Watch the Peaches Take on the Belles at League Stadium
A League of Their Own Night: Peaches vs. Belles will take place on Saturday, July 12th, at League Stadium, with the first pitch at 5:30 PM EST. The event will take you back to 1943, when the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) kicked off its inaugural season during World War II. Celebrate this historic moment by watching a re-enactment of the Rockford Peaches vs. the Racine Belles, followed by a Bombers game. Tickets will be available soon!
