Will Illinois Have a White Christmas This Year? Here’s What to Expect
The holiday season in Illinois always brings a mix of excitement and anticipation, and one of the biggest questions on everyone’s mind is: Will we get a White Christmas?
There’s something magical about waking up to a blanket of snow on December 25, but let’s face it—Mother Nature doesn’t always play along.
This year, we’ve turned to two trusted sources of weather wisdom, the Old Farmer’s Almanac, and the National Weather Service, to see if Illinoisans should prepare for snow boots or just stick with umbrellas. Here’s what they’re saying about the forecast—and what it means for your holiday plans.

Illinois Christmas Forecast: Snowflakes? More Like Rain Drops and Sunshine
If you were dreaming of a White Christmas in Illinois this year, it might be time to lower those expectations—like way, way down. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the two weeks leading up to Christmas and the day itself are likely to see a mix of sunny and rainy periods. (Spoiler: snow is not in the mix.) Post-Christmas, the Almanac predicts chilly weather with some snow, so maybe Santa’s late, but at least we’ll get a dusting before 2025 rings in.
The National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center (CPC), meanwhile, predicts a warmer-than-normal Illinois December and below-normal chances of precipitation. Translation: Even Jack Frost isn’t bothering with us this holiday season.
Now, before you start packing away the Christmas spirit, let’s focus on some joys that don’t involve trudging through slush.
How about holiday light displays? Without snow, you can walk through them without freezing your toes off. Outdoor holiday markets? You won’t have to chug three cups of hot cocoa to survive them. And let’s be honest—do you really want to dig your car out of a snowbank on Christmas morning?
So, while the weather might disappoint your snow globe fantasies, Illinoisans can still deck the halls, sip mulled wine, and celebrate under twinkling lights. No snow? No problem. We’ll take a drama-free Christmas commute as the real gift this year.
