Have You Dined at Illinois’ Oldest Restaurant Still Serving Since 1847?
If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to eat in a place that’s older than the telephone, the light bulb, and even the state of Wisconsin’s cheese obsession, you don’t have to look far.
The Village Tavern in Long Grove has been serving hearty tavern fare since 1847, making it the oldest continuously operating restaurant in Illinois. And it appears to be worth the one hour and fifteen–minute drive from Rockford (or a stop the next time you’re north of Chicago).
The Oldest Restaurant in Illinois

When the Village Tavern first opened its doors, Chicago had fewer than 20,000 residents. Nearly two centuries later, this family-owned landmark still welcomes guests inside its 125-seat dining room. The star attraction is the “President’s Bar,” that massive relic above that survived the Great McCormick Place Fire of 1867. It’s a true piece of Illinois history that you can sip a beer beside.
What’s on the Menu at Village Tavern?
The menu balances history with comfort. You’ll find German-inspired dishes like pork schnitzel and bratwurst, a nod to the cultural roots of the area. There’s also broasted chicken, a famous Friday fish fry (can’t wait to see just how famous), steaks, chops, and all the pub classics you’d expect. Pair it with a craft beer, a glass of wine, or something stronger from the full bar. A couple old-fashioneds sounds good to me. Thank you for the tip, Secret Chicago.
