Now is the perfect time to adopt a new four-legged, feline friend. June marks the height of what is known in the world of animal rescue as "kitten season." It is also Adopt a Shelter Cat Month.
What Is Kitten Season?
Kitten Season is the time of year when a high number of litters are born to un-altered female cats, resulting in an overpopulation at shelters across the country. It is a serious problem of epidemic proportions, especially in the Evansville and Henderson area.

49th Annual Adopt a Cat Month
Started 49 years ago by American Humane, Adopt a (Shelter) Cat Month is an initiative designed to raise awareness for homeless shelter cats and increase adoptions. Unfortunately, there is such an overpopulation of homeless cats, it often results in tough decisions for some animal rescue facilities.
The popular annual campaign is part of a larger effort by American Humane to help these beautiful animals and focus on the unique challenges and issues they face. Although cats have often been referred to as America’s “Most Popular Pet,” with an estimated 94 million living in 47 million U.S. households, they receive less veterinary care, have less research dedicated to their unique health/behavioral issues, are more likely to be feral, and are more likely to be euthanized in shelters than dogs.
Spreading the (Cat) Love
As the resident "crazy cat lady," around here, I feel like it's important to spread the word about National Adopt a Shelter Cat Month. My own feline companions, Jupiter Jack (pictured left) and Princess Moon (pictured right) are both shelter cats, and I am a firm believer in the "don't shop, adopt" mindset.

Jupiter was pulled from a high-kill shelter into a rescue just hours before he was set to be euthanized at only 12 weeks old. My Moon was raised in a foster home of one of our area rescues, and I brought her home at only 9 weeks old. They have both added so much love and joy into my home.
