The Indiana Department of Transportation says a new "Boulevard Left Intersection" is set to open on Highway 41 in Evansville this week.

Highway 41 and Washington Has Undergone a Lot of Work in Recent Months

There has been a great deal of work that has gone into the intersection of Highway 41 and Washington Avenue in recent months. This includes the all-new pedestrian bridge that was officially opened in December.

The Pedestrian Bridge Was Completed in December 2024

The pedestrian bridge is a fantastic upgrade for the community, particularly as it allows for safer passage across the highway - especially for school-aged children.

A New 'Boulevard Left Intersection' Is Set to Open

However, the pedestrian bridge is not the only upgrade that has been made to the Highway 41 and Washington Avenue intersection. According to INDOT, the new "Boulevard Left Intersection" is set to open this week.

You Will No Longer Be Able to Make Traditional Left-Hand Turns

If you are not familiar with what a boulevard left intersection is, you're not alone. The short explaination is that you will no longer be able to make traditional left turns at this intersection.

A new innovative intersection is set to open at U.S. 41 and Washington Avenue this week. The new Boulevard Left intersection will move all left turns away from the main intersection, utilizing signalized median U-turns instead.

Motorists Will Need to Make U-Turns Instead

Instead of making a left turn, motorists will use a built in U-turn lane to navigate to the appropriate side of the road to then execute a right-hand turn to travel on to their destination. Confused? Take a look at the visual shared by INDOT via Facebook.

INDOT calls the new intersection "innovative," but we aren't so sure yet.
