Blake Shelton Takes a Few Jabs at Luke Bryan Over ‘American Idol’ Gig
Two things we know about Blake Shelton: Number one, he's been on NBC's The Voice for quite a few years now. Number two, he's good friends with Luke Bryan, and likes to poke fun at his buddy's expense.
Oh, and related, there's a number three — Bryan just got confirmed as a judge for the upcoming season of American Idol. So that leads to a fourth thing we know: Shelton's going to take any potshot that he can at his friend, being the more experienced man on the reality show totem pole.
Sure enough, Shelton had plenty to say about Bryan in an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight. “I think people are going to realize just how dumb he really is when they see him on national television, in an environment where there’s no script,” he jokes. “But you’re also going to see what a great, great dude that guy is. I love Luke like a brother. I really do, but he’s just dumb.”
Shelton continues, “I’m sure the executives at ABC are really pissed at me right now for what they probably had to pay him to get him on that show. But good for you, Luke! Stick it to ’em! I mean, Luke Bryan is not cheap. He looks it, but he’s not.”
This is just good fun on Shelton's part, however. The pair have an established history as a comedy duo (unofficially known as "Bluke") hosting the Academy of Country Music Awards together for three years (2013-15).
Bryan will join judges Katy Perry and Lionel Richie for the next season of American Idol, which moves to ABC after airing on Fox for 15 seasons and is set to begin in early 2018.
